Whilst the logic of social media calls a person to tirelessly make copies of themselves, what we actually achieve with every press of the shutter is an erasure of our own presence. For that reason, it could be said that the precursor to taking selfies is the concept of a memento mori – an artwork designed to remind the beholder of their mortality.
